Perrier was a leading French zoologist, writer of science for the polupar audience, and a proponent of the theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics. He had his early eduation at Tulle, where he was born, and wnt on to study mathematics and physics at the École Normal Superior in Paris. He held several positoins in natural history museums, and participated in oceanographic expeditions. He was particularly interested in animlas which were able to reproduce by division. In the present work, his doctoral dissertation, he studies the organs of locomotion in two types of echinodermata, marine animals of the starfish type. The introduction provides a brief overview of previous studies in this field of biology. The plates exhibit organs of species under study.
